  • This is a great question! Our founder is an ADHD-er, neurodivergent woman - who has also worked as a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst for many years. We are passionate about reducing the risk of harm and trauma as a result of early intervention and therapy approaches.

Neurodiversity affirming supports embraces the inherent variation in neurological conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. It focuses on understanding and supporting individuals, diverse cognitive and behavioural traits rather than aiming to change them. This approach fosters acceptance, accommodates unique needs, and promotes skill development tailored to each person strengths. By embracing neurodiversity, therapy seeks to empower individuals, enabling them to thrive in their own way while minimising potential challenges and maximising their overall well-being and potential.

At Therapy in the Outback, providing neurodiversity affirming supports means that we take a strengths based approach.

While the NDIS takes a medical or deficit model approach (focusing on the things someone cannot do), we try to look at the person as an individual and learn about what works best for them, and let their therapy and goals be guided by their experience, rather than trying to make them “fit in” based on neurotypical standards. We rely on a variety of teaching approaches, and work closely with families to identify what is working best for them and/or their child.

  • Yes, we conduct both developmental, and diagnostic testing.

Developmental testing, involves assessing your child's overall development, and is not for the purpose of seeking a diagnosis. This can be helpful for parents looking to learn more about their child's support needs, but who are not quite ready to pursue formal diagnostic testing.

Our team also offers comprehensive assessments for Autism, for both children and Adults.

  • We’re here as a stepping stone to help you access support, until local services are available. We do this by shortcutting the first step, which typically involves a developmental assessment of your child’s support needs to access appropriate funding or know where to start.

We are then able to also provide consultation services - for both you as a parent, and your child, to get you started with some initial goals, until in person supports are available in your area.

Down the line, we’d love to be able to run 4 week “pop up clinics” in rural areas, but this is a long term goal for us that we’re not quite ready for just yet! Watch this space!

If you are not yet an NDIS participant and are looking for support navigating this process, we may be able to help by providing you with a developmental assessment.

  • Some support needs require specialised services, from other allied health professionals such as a speech therapist or occupational therapist - such as muscular or spinal concerns, swallowing concerns, or feeding concerns.

Our psychology team are equipped to provide mental health services, but we do not administer or prescribe any medication. This requires the ongoing support of a psychiatrist or general practitioner.

We are also not a crisis, or counselling service. Whilst we support caregivers through consultation and psychology services, we are not able to provide on call support, or emergency support.

If you or a loved one require emergency support, please call 000. If you are looking for emergency mental health care and treatment from a NSW Health mental health service, you can call the NSW Health Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511.
