What is Anxiety?

A heightened way of sensing and responding to the world

Anxiety is a natural human response to stress, uncertainty, or perceived danger. For some children and adults, this response is stronger and more frequent, making everyday situations feel overwhelming or unsafe. Anxiety is not misbehaviour or weakness. It’s the body and brain doing their best to stay safe sometimes working a little too hard. With understanding, gentle supports, and the right tools, people with anxiety can feel calmer, more confident, and able to handle life’s challenges.

Anxiety looks different for everyone

No two people experience anxiety in the same way. Some may feel it in their body, racing heart, tense muscles, or nausea. Others may experience constant worry, avoidance of certain situations, or sudden panic. Anxiety can also show up as anger, irritability, or withdrawal. Recognising these patterns early helps us respond with compassion and build a sense of safety.

Support should soothe, not pressure

Telling someone to “just relax” or “stop worrying” rarely works and can make them feel misunderstood. Real support is about creating calm environments, offering reassurance, and teaching ways to manage big feelings without judgment. With patience and consistent strategies, people with anxiety can build resilience, independence, and confidence in navigating daily life.

With Brooke’s help, our whole approach changed. His support workers stopped trying to force things and started meeting him where he’s at by giving him time, space, and choices.

Now, J’s so much more relaxed. He actually wants to spend time with his workers because they see him for who he is. He laughs more, joins in on his own terms, and doesn’t feel like he has to mask or meet anyone else’s expectations.
